Fuel efficiency will stand to improve by nearly 25% as compared to standard gasoline engines. Carbon Dioxide will be reduced by around 13% compared to normal diesel engines. The V-8 Duramax will be NOx compliant in all 50 states as it is one of the cleanest diesel engines ever built. The engine is expected to yield just over 310 HP and 520 ft·lb of torque. The new diesel particulate filter system has been upgraded to meet government (mandated) emissions regulations for any diesel engine that is manufactured on or after January 2007. The new code requires a 90% reduction of particulate matter & 50% reduction to the NOx.

The 2008 Silverado 2500 Duramax diesel truck has the 6.6L Turbo engine available. The V8 Turbo engine offers
365 horsepower at 3200 RPM with 660 pound per feet of torque at 1600 RPM. The engine starts very well in colder
temperatures because of the Glow plugs, which convert electricity into heat when starting. The advanced pilot
injection and electronics from the direct injection system helps to reduce combustion noise and reduces emissions.
The engine also has an air-to-air intercooler and computer controlled vanes, which is because of the variable geometry
smart turbocharger that is located between the cylinder heads. The cast aluminum cylinder heads have a four-valve design
that helps maximize power and reduces emissions.
